Recent Programming Highlights
Southend Radio 105.1 is dedicated to providing entertaining, informative, and local radio for Southend and surrounding areas. Some of the highlights from the past few months have included live coverage of Southend Festival of the Air, broadcast from locations across the seafront. We gave away a brand new Renault Clio with our In It To Win It promotion, where four listeners 'lived' inside the car for a week. Our Battle of the Bands contest attracted thousands of music fans to the seafront over seven weeks, with the final generating more than four thousand votes from the public audience. Our Drietime presenter James O'Neill ran the London Marathon, raising more than £2000 for Havens Hospices. We have also attempted to break the world record for the most number of women in bikinis in a photograph, which generated nationwide press interest. We also donated thousands of toys to Southend Borough Council's Children & Familes team thanks to a fantastic response to our Christmas Toy Appeal.
Recent News Highlights
Southend Radio's first six months have seen hundreds of news stories - ranging from the exciting to the touching to the ridiculous. Within 8 hours of being on air a dead body had washed up on the beach no more than 1000 metres away - setting the trend for an eventful few months.
Promotion fever swept through the town in May as Southend United made it to the play off semi finals. Sadly a thumping defeat at Doncaster ended the dream for another year. On a more positive note Shrimpers fans won national acclaim for their outstanding behaviour and gracious acceptance of the heavy loss.
The ongoing movement of Southend's driving test centre saw Southend Radio hear from James Duddridge, MP for Rochford and Southend East, with calls to call off the switch to Basildon. Discussions are still ongoing.
Southend Radio reporters have been straight on the scene on a number of incidents around the area, ranging from flat fires to traffic incidents to escaped snakes!
Features on the DP World development and how we celebrate St George's Day were also broadcast - with plenty more planned for the future!
